Tuning René Marie
Very few GRAMMY-nominated artists start a music career in their mid-40s. And then there’s René Marie - a twice-nominated jazz vocalist with eleven albums under her belt. Told through a series of vignettes animated over 16mm plates, TUNING RENÉ MARIE is a short mixed media documentary about René's extraordinary path in life up to that point, and the saving grace of music at every turn.

Director’s Statement
René’s story is a testament to the power and necessity of art. Making this film opened my eyes to the importance of listening to one’s inner needs and desires, and taught me to feel more secure in my own path. I hope Tuning René Marie invites its audience to take a moment and ask ‘What do I want and what do I need in this life to feel whole and fulfilled?’
About René Marie
In a span of two decades, 11 recordings and countless stage performances, vocalist René Marie has cemented her reputation as not only a singer but also a composer, arranger, theatrical performer and teacher. Guided and tempered by powerful life lessons and rooted in jazz traditions laid down by Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington and other leading ladies of past generations, she borrows various elements of folk, R&B and even classical and country to create a captivating hybrid style. Her body of work is musical, but it’s more than just music. It’s an exploration of the bright and dark corners of the human experience, and an affirmation of the power of the human spirit.
